Who Needs a Driving License?
Anyone who wishes to drive a motor vehicle—two-wheeler, car, or commercial vehicle—must obtain a valid Driving License. The minimum eligibility criteria are:
- 16+ years for gearless two-wheelers (with parental consent)
- 18+ years for geared two-wheelers and private four-wheelers
- 20+ years for commercial vehicles (with additional requirements)
Step-by-Step Process to Get a Driving License
1. Apply for Learner’s License (LL)
- Fill out Form 2 (Application)
- Appear for a theory test (online or offline)
- Receive a Learner’s License valid for 6 months
2. Practice Driving
- Learn to drive on Indian roads with or without a driving school
3.Book a Driving License Test Appointment
- Schedule a driving test after 30 days of obtaining the LL
4. Appear for the Driving Test
- Demonstrate driving skills before an RTO officer
- If passed, receive your DL within a few days
5. Receive Your Permanent Driving License
- Issued by RTO and sent via post or available for pickup
What Documents are Required to Apply for Driving License?
For both Learner’s and Driving License applications, you will need:
Proof of Age (any one):
- Birth Certificate
- School Leaving Certificate
- Passport
- PAN Card
Proof of Address (any one):
- Aadhaar Card
- Passport
- Voter ID
- Utility bill (electricity/water)
Others:
- Passport-sized photographs
- Form 2 (Application Form)
- Medical Certificate (Form 1A for applicants above 40 or for commercial DL)
