What is Vehicle Re-Registration?
Vehicle re-registration refers to the process of updating your vehicle’s registration details with the RTO of a new state or union territory when you move from one state to another in India.
The process includes:
- Issuing a new registration number (with the new state’s code)
- Payment of the road tax applicable in the new state
- Cancellation of the old registration number (if applicable)
- Endorsement of changes in the RC book

Step-by-Step Process of Vehicle Re-Registration
1. Obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC)
- Get NOC from the original RTO where the vehicle was first registered.
2. Transport the Vehicle to the New State
- Drive or ship your vehicle to the new state with NOC and ID proofs.
3. Pay Road Tax
- Pay the applicable road tax in the new state (based on vehicle type and age).
4. Submit Re-Registration Application
- Apply at the local RTO with Form 20 and required documents.
5. Vehicle Inspection
- The RTO will conduct a physical inspection of the vehicle.
6. Get New Registration Number
- After successful verification, a new Registration Certificate (RC) is issued.
7. Claim Road Tax Refund (Optional)
Apply for a refund of road tax paid in the previous state (if applicable).

- Original RC (Registration Certificate)
- Valid Insurance Certificate
- Valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate
- NOC from the original RTO
- Form 20 – Application for registration
- Form 27 – Application for assignment of new registration
- Form 33 – Address change form
- Owner’s PAN Card, Aadhaar Card, or other valid address proof
- Original Invoice copy of the vehicle (in some states)
- Chassis number pencil print
- Passport-size photographs
- Road tax payment receipt (new state)
