Driving License Renewal

Renew Your Driving License Quickly & Hassle-Free

Driving with an expired license is illegal and punishable under Indian law. To continue driving legally, it’s essential to renew your Driving License (DL) before or soon after expiry.

At Friends RTO Consultancy, we help you renew your driving license with ease, without standing in long RTO queues or dealing with confusing paperwork

What is Driving License Renewal?

Driving License Renewal is the official process of extending the validity of your expired or soon-to-expire Driving License. A private DL is typically valid for 20 years or until the holder turns 40, whichever comes first. After that, periodic renewals are required.

Renewing ensures you are legally permitted to drive and continue to receive insurance and legal protection on the road.

Who Needs to Renew Their Driving License?

You should apply for DL renewal if:

  • Your Driving License has expired or will expire within the next 6 months.
  • Your DL was issued more than 20 years ago, or when you were under 40 years old.
  • You are over 40, 50, or 60 years old and require age-based renewal.
  • You want to upgrade from LMV to the commercial category during renewal.
  • Your DL has been lost or damaged (in such cases, you may need a  duplicate DL + renewal).

Note: Driving without a valid DL can result in hefty fines, vehicle impoundment, and insurance rejection in case of an accident.

Step-by-Step Process for Driving License Renewal

1. Eligibility Check

  • Confirm your license type and expiry date.
  • Ensure you’re within the allowed renewal window.

2. Document Collection

  • Gather identity, age, address, and health documents.

3. Medical Fitness (If Applicable)

  • A medical certificate (Form 1A) is mandatory for applicants over 40 or for commercial licenses.

4. Application Submission

  • Fill out Form 2 and submit online or offline with supporting documents.

5. Pay Government Fees

  • Fees vary depending on DL type and delay in renewal.

6. Verification by RTO

  • Your documents will be verified; a driving test may be required in case of delayed renewal.

7. Receive Your Renewed DL

  • The renewed license will be delivered to your address or can be collected from the RTO

FAQs

When should I renew my driving license in Delhi?

You should renew your driving license within 30 days before or after its expiry date. If it’s renewed within this grace period, there is no late fee. After 30 days, a late fine is applicable, and after 5 years, you must apply for a new license again

Can I renew my driving license online?

Yes. You can visit https://parivahan.gov.in and apply online. But note:
- A medical certificate (Form 1A) is mandatory if you're above 40 or renewing a transport license.
- Biometric verification at RTO may still be required.
(Many prefer using RTO agents like Friends RTO Consultancy to avoid delays or rejections.)

Is a driving test required for license renewal?

No. A driving test is not required for DL renewal unless:
- Your license has expired for over 5 years.
- You’re converting from a non-transport to a transport license (in some states)

Can I renew my DL in a different state or RTO?

Yes, you can. But you will need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the RTO where your DL was originally issued. Some states may allow DL renewal without NOC if your Aadhaar is linked.

What is the fee for a driving license renewal?

- Private license renewal fee: ₹200
- Late fine (after 30 days): ₹300 + ₹100/month delay
- Smart Card fee (if applicable): ₹200
- Transport license renewal: ₹400–₹1,000 depending on class and state

How long does it take to receive the renewed driving license?

It usually takes 7–15 working days after a successful application and RTO processing. With Friends RTO Consultancy, you can track the application and get faster assistance.

Is Aadhaar mandatory for DL renewal?

While not legally mandatory, Aadhaar is preferred for quick eKYC, verification, and online application processing. Linking Aadhaar also helps in avoiding extra address or identity proof submission.

Can I drive while my license renewal is in process?

Yes, if you’ve received an acknowledgment slip or application receipt with a renewal date. But carry it with your expired DL to avoid issues during traffic checks.
